If you’ve found out your having your first baby, your probably reading every book you can get your hands on right about now. Maybe you’re lucky enough to know a lot about babies because you had younger siblings, babysat or something else entirely. Maybe you’re someone whose only experience with babies was the doll you destroyed as a toddler. Regardless of your level of experience, most moms-to-be are anxiously absorbing every written word or loads of verbal advice from well-wishing friends.

You’re going to learn a great deal once you’re expecting. One term you’ll likely hear a lot about is swaddling.” And, if you’re not familiar with swaddling, it can seem extremely unfamiliar, confusing and even somewhat strange. So, what exactly is swaddling? Basically, swaddling is wrapping an infant in a swaddling cloth or blanket very securely so they’re not able to move their limbs a great deal. And don’t worry, you’re not restraining your baby. Swaddling has been around for centuries and offers womb-like safety and security to your infant.

With that in mind, you’re going to need plenty of swaddling cloths to keep your little one cozy and snug. Aden and Anais are the swaddling specialists and are considered one of the premiere brands for swaddling cloths in the world. Their cloths are made of a muslin fabric, that’s both breathable and soft for your precious bundle of joy. A large assortment of adorable prints are available, whether you’re having a baby boy, baby girl or you’ve decided to wait to find out. Visit your favorite baby boutique to take a peek at the entire Aden and Anais swaddling collection and stock up on your favorites.

For yet another cozy, cuddly option, choose a sleeping bag from the Aden and Anais collection. Made of the same soft, muslin fabric as the award-winning swaddling cloths, the sleeping bags are an ideal solution to keep your little one warm and safe all night long. As adorable as they are practical, you’ll definitely want more than one to help promote sweet slumber for your baby.

Have you ever noticed that some babies always seem to be wearing a bib? Have you ever wondered why? Well, as a mom-to-be, you’ll learn very quickly that bibs aren’t just for feeding time. You’ll use them constantly to help protect your favorite baby clothes from the inevitable spit-up and drool that will become a constant in your life. The Aden and Anais bib collection is top notch in both function and fashion. You’ll love the front snap closure which makes getting them on and off a breeze. And you’ll have no difficulty finding an array of prints that you love.

And no baby ensemble would be fully complete without the addition of an Aden and Anais Issie. And what exactly is an Issie? You might better know it  as a blankie, lovey, snuggy or some other crazy made up word you’ll undoubtedly use to describe your baby’s favorite blanket. An Issie, and you can call it just that, is a charming little security blanket that’s the perfect size for baby’s little hands. Featuring a cotton muslin fabric and silky satin trim, you’ll come to love watching your little one cuddle up with Issie, while gently stroking the satin trim for a soothing feeling.

No matter what, you’ll find that you’re going to learn a lot about babies, from what you read, what you hear and most of all what you experience. So, make your experience, and your babies, even more perfect with the addition at least something from the Aden and Anais collection.

Why Babies (and Moms!) Love Swaddling Blankets

Swaddling is an art, and for parents, a necessity. Since 4000 B.C. and migrating mothers, the tradition has been passed down to modern families as a way to reduce crying and comfort newborns. We wanted to take a look at exactly what the benefits of swaddling are.

The idea behind modern swaddling is that the blanket creates a womb-like cocoon that babies can feel safe and protected in. The baby feels a sense of snuggly security throughout the night as well as having a blanket to moderate body temperature. This is why the muslin fabric of swaddles from companies like Aden + Anais and Little Giraffe are so important – the natural breathability of the fabric doesn’t allow for overheating when wrapped correctly.  The Journal of Pediatrics showed that swaddling increased continuous sleep throughout the night, which led to less startled awakenings and less crying. Almost sounds too good to be true!

Swaddling also reduces the risk of SIDS by helping babies stay on their back throughout the night.  I hadn’t ever thought of this (sadly!) but swaddling your baby before breastfeeding is a way to make the process a LOT easier until they learn to latch on. Reducing the extra movements allows more focus that can help breastfeeding go smoothly (after learning to latch on skin contact is important for development though).

There are so many benefits of swaddling– reduce chance of SIDS, baby and mommy sleep better,  warmth, extra security, easier breastfeeding… Looks like swaddles are a winner!

California Cozy Baby Boutique is an authorized retailer for Aden and Anais and Little Giraffe swaddling blankets. Each one is made of the softest muslin with chic designs.  Let’s be honest– swaddles are just plain cute as well!  With all the new swaddle designs, babies can be styling every time of the day.

Some wrap hints: a full wrap is great for infants younger than 60 days while a “burrito wrap” encourages arm movement in babies older than 60 days. Correctly wrapping a swaddle is very important to learn so make sure you read online or watch a video beforehand.  We recommend watching this CBS feature “Swaddling Your Baby” where guest expert Raegan Moya-Jones of Aden + Anais explains the art of swaddling.
